What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content so AI-powered search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews — can crawl, understand, rank, and cite it in their generated answers.
Why GEO exists
Section titled “Why GEO exists”Traditional search returns a page of ranked links; the user picks one. Generative engines return one synthesized answer that cites a handful of sources. If your site is not among those citations, you are invisible for that query — even if you rank #1 on Google for it.
The term was introduced by the Princeton GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), which showed that specific, measurable content changes shift how generative engines rank and cite sources.
What GEO actually optimizes
Section titled “What GEO actually optimizes”GEO targets how a large language model perceives content, not how a crawler indexes it:
- Content features — competitive framing, direct answers to user intent, authority signals, scannable structure.
- Citability — self-contained, quotable passages an engine can lift into an answer with attribution.
- Structured data — JSON-LD schema markup that makes entities and claims machine-readable.
- AI-crawler affordances — files like
llms.txtthat tell AI crawlers what content to prioritize.
The 10 GEO features
Section titled “The 10 GEO features”Research behind the E-GEO toolkit (arXiv:2511.20867) identified 10 features that consistently appear in higher-ranking content across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: ranking emphasis, user intent alignment, competitive differentiation, social proof, compelling narrative, authoritativeness, unique selling points, urgency signals, scannable format, and factual accuracy. Applying all 10 together outperforms any single heuristic.
